Things I’ve learned by watcing TV

Sunday, March 23rd, 2008

I’m not talking about fiction TV, like “Law & Order,” “CSI” etc. No, there are so many good authentic crime programs on TV, it’s amazing. Last night I saw a “48 Hours” program on stalking. They were talking about people on TV, like news anchors. It’s estimated that - all of them stalker - yup, 100 percent.

One of my very favorite program is on Saturday night - “Dead Man Talking” - ever see it? The program highlights homicides around the country that were solved by forensic pathologist doing autopsies - fascinating.

How about the HBO special “Autopsy?” Most of the are hosted by Michael Baden, the former chief ME of New York City. A little gross, but so interesting. Baden was highlighted on one program because he reviewed the Warren Commission Results on the JFK assassination. He proved there was one shooter - well, we know that, right? He was also privy to all the informaion on the O.J. trial. Yes, he thinks O.J. did it too, but….he had help afterwards. Makes you wonder who, huh?

Lastly, if you ever get a chance to see an old HBO special title, “Iceman: Confessions of a Serial Killer.” Watch it! A psychiatrist interviewed a serial killer who’s in prison for killing - something like 50 people. It will give you chills, guaranteed.

Those are a few of mine, what are yours? Till Thursday…..

Cop talk, this and that

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

I started to watch a really interesting-looking program on television last night - very authentic stuff. It was all about how or if one can commit the perfect murder. They had all kinds of experts on, even a doctor who teaches classes for writers on how to kill folks and get away with it - how fun it that? I stopped when they started with the maggots! I can watch parts of an autopsy, but can not handle maggots - yuck. However, I did learn one new and interesting thing. The forensic pathologist on the show said there is a window of five and a half hours to determine TOD. So, next time you see a cop show and they say, “He died at between six and eight last night” give them the old raspberry. It ain’t so.

I love all that cop lingo and am always looking for new terms, so if you have any - share, please! We’re all aware of the perps, unsubs or my favorite DRT. Know what that means? Dead right there! I found it in a mystery - don’t ask which on as I read three to five a week, but the female cop comes in, looks at the body and says, “Was he DRT?” So much more fun than books rife with the F word. I hung around Sheriff’s deputies for over two years and rarely heard them use the F word. They were more likely to call crooks dirt bags or scum bags.

So, that’s about all for today. I’m busy judging an RWA contest and I have to say, it’s very interesting! If you ever get a chance to judge any kind of contest - do. I’ve learned so much over the years it’s amazing. If you have a topic you’d like to discuss or have some good cop words to say - please do!
