“Fringe” Mystery? Sci-Fi? Adventure?

Sunday, September 14th, 2008

“Fringe” the new series on Fox wasn’t hyped nearly as much as “True Blood” and guess what? I liked it so much better! A combination of mystery, sci-fi, adventure, some romance and humor, there’s a lot to like about this new show.

The first show started with a great mysery. A jumbo jet from Germany, full of dead people, lands by itself in Boston. The bodies are all degraded and really yucky – neat! The government seals the plane and Hasmet is called in but no one can figure out just what happened.

Then we see two FBI agents in bed together – the man professes his love for the woman even though they both know they shouldn’t be fraternizing. Before things can heat up, each of their cell phones goes off and they are called to the airport. They follow clues and discover a storage locker with a lot of scientific equipment – and a man. The male FBI agent chases the man with his female partner following closely. The bad guy triggers a device which blows up the male FBI agent and…his skin starts to harden like those of the people on the plane.

For the rest of the story the female FBI agent trying to track down the person or people who injured her lover so she can reverse the process and save the man she loves. There’s a mad scientist, his attractive and arrogant son and a cow. Gotta love the cow!

The action was fast, and the show had one of the best twists in it that I’ve seen in a long while. Some the plot strains credulity, but hey, it’s fiction and it’s great fun! I’m really looking forward to the next installment of “Fringe” this week on Tuesday at 9:00 PM. Watch it and let me know what you think.

“True Blood” – The new mystery series on HBO

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

Can’t believe it’s been so long since I’ve updated my blog! I will try to be better in the future.

Okay, I looked forward to the new HBO series “True Blood” but have to say, I was disappointed. The premise of the show is that the Japanese have invented a synthic blood for vampires to drink so they no longer have to attack humans. The result is that vampires now walk around openly – at least at night, and subsist on “Tru Blood” that they can buy at the local supermarket! On top of vampires, we have a main character, Sookie Stackhouse, who’s physic and can hear every one’s thoughts – everyone except the vampires. A bit over the top? Yup.

In spite of an interesting premise, I thought the show was slow, hard to understand and all the Southern characters had IQ’s of about 40. If I’d read the series of books upon which the show was based, it would have made more sense. But I’m sure I’m not the only viewer who had never read the books.

Besides the characters all being dumb as rocks, there were a couple of gratuitous sex scenes. Now, I have nothing against a good sex scene, if it makes sense in the context of the story. These didn’t. It was almost as if the producers said, “Hey, let’s put in a real good sex scene right in the beginning to grab the audience!” and they did. There were a couple of bloody scenes too culminating with Sookie getting the snot kicked out of her, so if you’re not into gore, skip this series.

I probably will watch again on Sunday, to see in the story gets more interesting. If I were to grade the show, I’d have to give “True Blood” a C. If you watched it, what did you think?
